SS Mobile Command HQ, Camden, London, England

30th December 2017, 10:49am

Gärtner was watching the screens intently. The dozen SS men who had gone below the surface had cameras mounted on their helmets, something unique to their small task force. Gärtner considered them elite, and he was sure to make them the best-equipped force in the SS. Until recently he had every hope in them, but after Kopp's failings, he wasn't so sure. The screens were crackling and cutting in and out. The audio was even worse.

"Sir, the signal will be poor beneath the surface," Rettig said, trying to mitigate any criticism that would inevitably be levelled at him. They were watching the camera feed from the man who was just a metre away from Roy and Martin. He was peering all around, but could see nothing.

"There's nothing here," he complained.

As the words came out of his mouth, arms appeared at the side of the camera view. They wrapped around the man's head and snapped his neck. He was lowered carefully to the ground, and Kopp found himself staring into the eyes of Baker himself.

"Jesus Christ!"

He shouted in the intercom, "Unit 2 come in. You have a man down. I repeat a man down!"

The radio crackled, and they heard a few muffled words that were unintelligible. Baker looked into the camera and put up his middle finger, pointing right into the camera, as if knowing Gärtner was there watching in. Gärtner was fuming, as he saw Baker reach around to the back of the man's helmet. He disconnected the camera feed, and the line went dead.

"What the hell is going on down there?"

"Unit 2 squad leader, report in," said Rettig.

There was no response.

"Sir, we have lost audio communication.”

"Lost it? What the hell are you even paid to do?" he asked furiously. He threw down the headset, pacing around the small room, as Rettig tried in vain to contact them once again. The video feeds were getting weaker and breaking up. Gärtner felt powerless. He noticed a glimmer of movement on one of the screens. Baker appeared as if out of thin air, drove a knife up into a soldier’s throat, and lowered him face first onto the ground.

"Useless!" Gärtner roared.

His cool demeanour had entirely gone. He felt as though he was dealing with children. He threw open the back of the command vehicle. The other squad was standing around, supposedly protecting him.

"Get down there, now, all of you! Hurry!"

"But, Obersturmführer, we are your protection detail. We cannot leave you."

"Protection? What the hell do I need you for, when I have those?" He pointed to the three Leopards.

"Sir, I must..."

"You must shut up and do your damn job. That is all, go!"

The officer dared not argue with him, and soon rounded up the rest of the troops to go in after the first squad. Kopp was climbing back into his Leopard to be ready for anything, but Hasek looked entertained by the whole thing.

"About time we had a challenge. You have
